Power Planning for a Reliable Southern African Regional Grid

Southern Africa has suffered from multiple power disruptions in the past decade due to inadequate electrical generation capacity, as well load developments locations that were not suitably planned for. African countries are able have reliable, sustainable, and efficient grids. The use of interconnections for exchange power, especially long-distance transmission networks, is important. Installing a suitable high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) with direct (HVdc) will improve active–reactive compensation when transmitting over long distances (when bulk possible). Flexible system (FACTS) devices typically combinations shunt series converters. These approaches capable improving stability voltage while allowing be transferred minimal losses an exchange. In this article, two HVDC line-commutated converter (LCC) links, i.e., Angola–Namibia Aggeneys–Kokerboom, applied minimize 2657.43 2120.91 MW, setpoints 1000 600 respectively. 2500 475 MVAr SVCs used control instabilities at Namibia Mozambique substations, HVdc reduce FACTS enhance controllability transfer extremely effective, particularly lines transporting power.
